Residency Training Accreditation
PHILIPPINE BOARD OF OPHTHALMOLOGY (PBO) ACCREDITATION OF RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAMS
In tandem with the written and oral diplomate residents’ examinations, accreditation of institutions strives for excellence in Ophthalmological Residency Training Programs.
Accreditation certifies that the facilities, resources, activities, and faculty available in the institution and its residency training program have attained pre-established standards essential to preparing physicians to deliver competent general eye care with comprehensive clinical, surgical knowledge and skills.1
Accreditation is formal and independent. It relies on a reciprocal environment of trust, experienced and analytical professional judgment, and extensive evaluation of requirements.2
Importance of Accreditation
It affirms that the Ophthalmology Departments have been approved for training by an independent third-party.
It assures the public that EyeMDs who have graduated from accredited programs and who have passed the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology (PBO) examinations are proficient and capable.
It assures aspiring residents that the institution is formally qualified for ophthalmologic training.
Accreditation Goal and Process
Achieving Accreditation status every three years is the goal.
It is a two staged process composed of 1) self-analysis and 2) verification of fulfilled criteria that help establish quality standards through on-site visits.
Institutions that undergo accreditation undergo a process of critical self-assessment with the mind-set of unrelenting improvements in its capacity to assure that their training policies, processes, and performance meet and maintain the standards set by the PBO in 5 basic criteria.
The five Criteria address:
- Facilities and Documents
- Teaching Resources
- Teaching Activities
- Personnel
- Performance
Importantly, the accreditation process evaluates the consolidation of criteria into a coherent holistic program for training in ophthalmology spearheaded, cultivated, maintained, and assured by the institutions’ consultant staff. The process emphasizes excellence through self-regulation, and reliance on the collaborative efforts of an institution’s faculty for supervising, guiding, and mentoring resident trainees.
